Fitzie's Takeout - a step forward in rejuvenation of East Pembroke
The economic regeneration of East Pembroke has started to take shape with the launch of two new businesses next door to each other.
Fitzie's Takeout & Catering Service and St. Monica's Variety Store, which are based in the same building in St. Monica's Road, both opened in May in what has become one of the most notorious areas for crime and violence on the Island in recent months, including a number of shootings in February and May this year.
But Alvin Fitzgerald, owner of Fitzie's Takeout & Catering Service, who also owns the whole building, believes the two new enterprises will provide an economic boost to the region.
Michael Weeks, MP for the constituency Pembroke East Central, said he hoped this was just the start of things to come in terms of new businesses setting up in the area.
"Having those two businesses is going to help to rejuvenate the area and hopefully bring good business and vibrancy to this part of our community," he said.
Having bought the premises, Mr. Fitzgerald converted one half into a takeout and rented out the other part to the variety store business.
Mr. Fitzgerald, having worked in the hotel industry for the past 12 years, including a spell at the Fairmont Southampton, decided to put his experience to good use and try his hand at the restaurant and catering trade.
"I am trying to generate some activity and interest in the neighbourhood, and also to get a return on my investment," he said.
"So far I have only been open two months, but have already been getting some good feedback."
The takeout offers everything from patties, burgers and snacks to chicken, fish and shrimp dinners, side orders and sandwiches. The business also caters for weddings and parties of all descriptions.
Fitzie's Takeout & Catering Service is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.30 a.m. and 9 p.m.
