Insurers see more suspected fraud

NEW YORK (Bloomberg) — Insurers reported 14 percent more cases of suspected fraud in 2009 than a year earlier as drivers intentionally crashed cars and roofing companies damaged buildings to generate claims, an industry group said.

Insurers referred 85,209 questionable claims to the National Insurance Crime Bureau last year compared with 74,902 in 2008, the Des Plaines, Illinois-based group said today in a statement distributed by PR Newswire.
