Internet speeds rise as ISPs launch 8MB services

Internet users will be able to enjoy faster speeds following the launch of a new 8 Megabit (MB) service and the potential for a 12MB service in the future.

Bermuda CableVision announced the launch of two new broadband link data service packages deliver speeds up to 8MB for $55 per month and up to 6MB for $45 per month earlier this month, as reported in The Royal Gazette.

Both of the services are currently or will be offered through Internet Service Providers (ISP) North Rock Communications, FKB Transact and Logic.

North Rock was the first to offer the new services at $129.95 per month for 6MB and $154.95 per month for 8MB, making the total cost for 8MB – the fastest residential speed available on the Island – $209.95 per month

FKB Transact will be launching its 8MB service today at $128.95 per month.

Bill Dickinson, general manager of FKB Transact, said his company would be working closely with customers to get them onto the right price plan.

"We are happy to compete at the higher speeds and provide competitive pricing and service to our customers," he said.

A Logic spokeswoman said that after reviewing the new offering, it decided to roll out its own 8MB product and will be upgrading the speed of its current Ultimate offering from 6MB to 8MB. As of Monday, the company's Ultimate package will be $129.95 per month.

"The decision to do so was a combination of wanting to stand by our Logic upgrade promise and also ensure the introduction on new access speeds didn't result in a significant increase in cost for the customer," she said.

"We believe that the minimal pricing differential of $30 between the Premium and Ultimate will allow those customers who truly want faster speeds to upgrade with minimal impact to their purse."

CableVision has also recently applied to the Telecommunications Commission to offer 12MB high speed data service.
