LONDON - Britain's leading share index closed 0.1 percent lower as disappointing US data, falls from miners and index heavyweight Vodafone outweighed buoyant financials. The FTSE 100 closed at 5,159.72 points, down 5.98 or 0.12 percent.

EUROPE - European shares closed marginally higher with banks rising after BNP Paribas raised capital to shake off government influence, but with mixed economic data from the United States.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 0.1 percent to close at 1,002.25 points.

The benchmark index is up more than 55 percent from its lifetime low of March 9, as investors have become more confident on the prospects of economic recovery. It has risen 17.9 percent this quarter, on track to post its best quarterly rise in almost a decade.

FRANKFURT - The DAX index ended at 5,713.52 points, down 22.79 or 0.4 percent.

PARIS - The CAC-40 index closed at 3,814.1 points, down 10.9 or 0.28 percent.

ZURICH - The Swiss market index closed at 6,316.72 points, up 27.45 or 0.44 percent.

MILAN - The FT IT All Share index closed at 24,018.46 points, up 78.49 or 0.33 percent.

TOKYO - Japan's Nikkei average rose 0.9 percent, with exporters such as Kyocera rebounding after the yen pulled back from an eight-month high against the dollar.

The Nikkei rose 90.68 points to 10,100.2. The index slid 2.5 percent on Monday to mark its lowest close since July 24.

HONG KONG - Hong Kong shares rebounded from a three-week low with their biggest one-day percentage gain in more than a week, as investors scooped up shares of oversold stocks including banks and telecoms on an overnight rally on Wall Street. The index rose 2.06 percent, or 424.76 points, to 21,013.17, snapping three straight days of losses and posting its biggest one-day percentage rise since September 17.

SYDNEY - Australian shares gained 1.6 percent to their highest close in a year, up to 4,753.10 in Sydney. New Zealand's NZX 50 Index climbed 0.8 percent to 3,155.39 in Wellington.
