LONDON - Britain's leading share index fell, with energy and mining stocks easing along with commodities on demand worries as downbeat US jobs data last week and euro debt concerns sapped investor confidence. The FTSE 100 closed at 5,069.06 points, down 56.94 or 1.11 percent.

EUROPE - European shares fell, as worries over debt problems in Hungary added to jitters about fiscal health in Europe, while BP was pressured by a broker downgrade and concern over the impact of its oil spill. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares closed 0.8 percent lower at 990.49 points, slipping back after earlier rising to an intraday high at 1,000.50. The index has lost 11 percent since mid-April when fears of a sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone prompted investors to abandon riskier assets.

PARIS - The CAC-40 index closed at 3,413.72 points, down 41.89 or 1.21 percent.

ZURICH - The Swiss market index closed at 6,291.04 points, down 7.93 or 0.13 percent.

MILAN - The FT IT All Share index closed at 19,262.54 points, down 121.64 or 0.63 percent.

TOKYO - Japan's Nikkei average plunged nearly four percent, marking its biggest daily drop in 14 months. The benchmark Nikkei closed down 3.84 percent or 380.39 points at 9,520.80.

HONG KONG - Stocks fell, tracking a slump in global markets. The Hang Seng Index ended 2.03 percent or 401.92 points lower at 19,378.15 paring some losses but closing below the February lows near 19,400 which analysts have cited as a near-term support.

SYDNEY - Shares shed 2.78 percent to their lowest level in nearly two weeks, wiping A$39 billion ($32 billion) off the market as overseas investors took flight from risk and lower metals prices hit local mining stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 dropped 123.5 points to 4,325.9.
