Role: Mechanical Engineer, Belco

What is your job? As a Mechanical Engineer in Belco's engineering group, my job is to manage engineering projects, provide engineering support to Belco's operations group and to research emerging power generation technology that may be applicable to Bermuda.

What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite aspect of this job is the variety of activities that I am involved in on day-to-day basis; I really don't have a chance to get bored. There are currently a lot of engineering challenges at Belco as we strive to find ways to continue to provide a secure, reliable and sustainable electric power system amidst the uncertainty surrounding the expansion of our central plant, an aging fleet of diesel generators, distributed generation and renewable energy.

What is your least favourite part of the job? My least favourite aspect is perhaps the misconception that people often have when they find out that I am an engineer at Belco. So I shall take this opportunity to set the record straight: 1. Yes. I do pay for electricity and 2. If your lights go out, please don't call me. I will not be able to get them to come back on any faster than if you simply dialed 955 and reported it yourself.

What is your most interesting experience at work? My most interesting experience to date was back when I was on the Belco project team for the most recent Diesel Power Plant Expansion from 2003-2005. The project was for the installation of two 14 MW Diesel Generators. It was an amazing experience to be involved with such a large project from start to finish. I had the opportunity to contribute to the power plant design and also to oversee various aspects of the plant construction and testing of equipment.

What would you be doing otherwise? At the ripe old age of 29, I think my days for fulfilling my childhood dreams to play in the NBA have passed. Aside from retiring early, I have also had an interest in commercial property development.
