Staple food items such as bread and milk cost the same as last month, but there was a big difference in the price of cereal and eggs, according to The Royal Gazette's latest price survey.

The paper checked 15 of the same products at three of Bermuda's main supermarket chains and found the total cost of a basket of goods was the most expensive at Lindo's in Devonshire at $68.57, followed by MarketPlace in Church Street at $66.60 and Supermart in Front Street was the cheapest at $65.25.

A loaf of Sunbeam white bread stayed at $4.75 across all three stores, as did a gallon of two percent Dunkley's milk, which cost $4.77 at MarketPlace, $4.55 at Supermart and $4.80 at Lindo's.

Other items which remained unchanged in price were 1lb top ground beef at $3.99 at both MarketPlace and Supermart and $4.10 at Lindo's, while a six-pack of red delicious apples cost the same at $5.95 and $4.99 at MarketPlace and Supermart, but Lindo's dropped its price from $8.39 to $5.49. MarketPlace and Lindo's both kept their 5lb bag of potatoes at $5.99, while Supermart cut its price to $3.89 from $5.99.

Cereal varied in price, with MarketPlace slashing the cost of a packet of Honey nut cheerios to $4.99 from $5.13, but Supermart upped its price from $4.65 to $5.40 and Lindo's from $4.63 to $5.07.

Supermart held steady on the price of a pack of its Dozen eggs A class at $3.55, but MarketPlace put its eggs on special, down from $3.29 to $2.19, while Lindo's increased its pack to $3.35 from $3.05.

The price of a bag of 2lb carrots was also on the rise, with MarketPlace increasing its cost by $1 to $5.99, Supermart by $2 to $5.99 and Lindo's by four cents to $5.09.

Government's consumer price index released last week revealed a 0.4 percent increase in inflation for the food sector in September, including big hikes in poultry products (7.4 percent), frozen peas (5.7 percent) and bagged apples (4.3 percent).
