Age: 25
Role: Discover Bermuda operations manager, The Fairmont Southampton
What is your job? My job is about creating exceptional memories for our guests. I plan and operate all aspects of destination management, which can be anything from event décor (on-site at The Fairmont Southampton or elsewhere on the island) and group activities, to transportation and restaurant dine-a-rounds.
What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is the people. From my clients and guests to my fellow colleagues at the hotel, I would be lost without the person-to-person contact on a daily basis. I love to help people and this is a great industry where you get the chance to make someone smile every day.
What is the least favourite part of the job? My least favourite part of the job would be the hours, especially during peak season. Sometimes I begin at 5 a.m. and don't stop until midnight, but it is part of the industry and all worth it when everything comes together according to plan.
What is your most interesting experience at work? My most interesting experience at work was planning and running an event last April for an overseas group. We had approximately 500 people take over Dockyard, where my colleagues and I had transformed the Maritime Museum's Keepyard and the surrounding areas into 'Her Majesty's Reception'. We had everything from knights in shining armour on horseback to a queen. Our hotel staff were even dressed in costumes reflective of the medieval era. This event was so much fun to plan and we all had a ball working that evening. Our male guests even wore new Bermuda shorts to the event, which we had arranged as well!
What would you be doing otherwise? If I were to be doing something else, it would definitely be in the hospitality industry and with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. I really love the brand. Within the industry, I would probably choose to work in conference services or sales if I were not in the Discover Bermuda department.
