Elliot Hubbard

Age: 37

Role: Associate - corporate attorney - Conyers Dill & Pearman Ltd., Bermuda

What is your job? As a corporate attorney at Conyers Dill & Pearman, I advise on a broad range of Bermuda corporate legal and regulatory matters including incorporations, corporate reorganisations and restructurings, public offerings and investment fund related matters. As part of a global law firm with offices in many jurisdictions, I often work together with colleagues in other locations to provide comprehensive and timely advice to our clients worldwide.

What is your favourite part of the job? The one aspect which I enjoy the most is the solution orientated nature of my job. It is one thing to know what the law is, but it is the broader application of the law to specific issues or problems together with the requisite level of commercial awareness in order to best satisfy clients' needs which really adds value to what we do. Novel issues do arise, and achieving the desired end result for clients in situations where the pathway is far from clear-cut can be a very rewarding experience.

What is your least favourite part of the job? Corporate law is a notoriously time consuming profession and at times the sheer volume of work coupled with time pressures can be overwhelming. It is not always easy to strike a balance between the demands of the job and one's personal life and there are many occasions where personal sacrifices must be made in order to provide the level of service and attention required to remain competitive in the global market. That said, it is also immensely rewarding to be able to provide levels of service that large financial centres, like New York, London and Asia demand.

What is your most interesting experience at work? Witnessing the impact of the global economic crisis in Bermuda. This has provided me with exposure to a significantly broader scope of legal issues than would otherwise be the case in times where global markets are performing well. It has been interesting to note the extent to which Bermuda's increased reliance on international business has resulted in its economy becoming more closely connected to global financial markets. As a result Bermuda has arguably felt the impact of the current financial crisis more directly than has been the case in previous periods of global economic challenges.

What would you be doing otherwise? Personal trainer. Prior to becoming a lawyer I was a professional cyclist representing Bermuda at numerous international events including the Olympics. I have a true love for sports and enjoy using my personal experience to help others try to reach their full athletic potential.
