THE JOB with JAY MEDEIROS

Jay Medeiros, of Greymane Contracting
Age: 28Role: Project manager trainee, Greymane ContractingWhat is your job? To be a project manager in the construction industry it's important to understand the issues that can arise on all types of construction projects. To develop that experience, I provide administrative support for the project managers, superintendents and quantity surveyors on all current building projects. On a given day, I might log or distribute incoming documentation, chase subcontractors for submittals or pricing, assist the quantity surveyor in the preparation of enquiries, liaise with suppliers to monitor the progress of orders or handle various administrative duties.

What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is watching a project grow from the ground up, then looking back and feeling a sense of achievement.

What is your least favourite part of the job? I am not one for sitting behind the computer all day, so the least satisfying aspect of this work, in the early days of my training, is that I am still in the office quite a bit. As my experience grows, I'll get out to the project sites more often and then I will have the chance to watch the development of these projects first hand.

What is your most interesting experience at work? Watching the tower crane go up at The Reefs was quite an experience. I even climbed up it and sat in the booth with the crane operator during a lift. It was definitely not another day in the office!

What would you be doing otherwise? Nothing - I love the construction industry.
