Role: Director of Sales and Marketing, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess

What is your job? My responsibility is to manage the hotel's catering, conference services, reservations and sales departments, as well as oversee revenue management. The emphasis in my daily work is on sales and marketing.

What is your favourite part of the job? People and variety bring each day alive for me. Working in hospitality, I don't spend much time lingering at my desk: I work with my team, meet with partners or clients and interact with guests. One of my favourite activities is when I can greet a guest as they arrive and then hear from that same guest before they leave. Learning what made their stay memorable is not just satisfying, it's a great learning experience. Hospitality suits me in general, as does this job in particular because I am very goal-oriented and competitive. I am energised by people and crave variety. At The Fairmont Hamilton Princess, each day is different and, because this is a service industry with people as its focus, the best-laid plans often need to change on a dime. To get everything done, I am indebted to the involvement of an amazing and accomplished 15-member team. Some have been in the sales department for 30 years, so the knowledge of our guests and systems is deep. Together, there's no problem we can't solve.

What is your least favourite part of the job? I have hundreds of e-mails, endless meetings and long days.

What is your most interesting experience at work? In sales, our work is ranked against the accomplishments of 55 other Fairmont hotels. In 2003, I was honoured to be selected for the President's Circle award as one of Fairmont's top 15 sales leaders worldwide. I get a great deal of satisfaction from my work on a day-to-day basis, yet this was such a rewarding validation from my peers and the company at large.

What would you be doing otherwise? I thrive on contact with people, so perhaps I would be working in customer service or public relations, no doubt within the hospitality industry — I love this business!
