Age: 46

Role: Office manager, Lancashire Insurance Company

What is your job? I am the office manager at Lancashire Insurance Company Ltd. Essentially, my job is to ensure that the administrative functions of the office run efficiently and support the core activities of Lancashire.

What is your favourite part of the job? In addition to working with some great people, I have the privilege of travelling to various places for the board and investor meetings. Last year, I travelled to Paris and this year to Sweden. If someone would have mentioned that I would be doing this a couple of years ago, I would have not believed it, because I do not like flying. I am not saying I am over my fear of flying but I make more of an effort to travel long distances since working at Lancashire. I am also fortunate to sit on a number of Lancashire committees, including our Foundation Committee, where everyone has a common goal and that is to help the community especially in the special needs area. This has been rewarding because I am able to help various charitable Bermuda organisations.

What is the least favourite part of the job? Just like with any job, there are aspects we would rather avoid. I would say filing is number one on the list. I am so glad that we are living in an age where most companies are striving for a paperless environment.

What is your most interesting experience at work? As the office manager, my job is interesting in many ways because the administrative department provides services to each department from sorting and distributing the mail to selecting office equipment to ensuring that visitors are made to feel welcomed. Lancashire will be moving to a new location in the near future so I am currently assisting in the design and layout of our new space. I find this very interesting because I am able to work on this project from the construction stage through to the final stage when we can eventually move in. This is not only a learning experience but also rewarding knowing that I am contributing in making this a reality. Being the office manager at Lancashire has been satisfying in so many ways. The opportunities given to me have been endless and most of all the relationships that have been formed are priceless.

What would you be doing otherwise? I am not sure because I did not think I would be an office manager at Lancashire when my ex-boss retired, but here I am. However, if I could change back the hands of time, I would have liked to have been a veterinarian because I love animals.
