Young Enterprise to hold first trade fair
form companies and make products, will hold their first trade fair this week.
"In Bermuda, this is an example of an organisation, the Institute of Directors (IOD), addressing the question of the communication gap between young people and the business community in a pro-active manner...this is certainly a success,'' said Mr. Ken Spurling, a member of the IOD executive committee.
The area board of Young Enterprises is a subcommittee of the IOD, and Mr.
Spurling is the chair of the area board.
"The big event at the moment is the trade fair,'' he continued.
The trade fair is scheduled for tomorrow from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from noon to 6 p.m., with awards, like the IOD Cup, to be presented tomorrow.
YE includes about 150 students and about 40 volunteers from the business community.
The Bermuda project began last year at Bermuda High School, Saltus, Mount St.
Agnes and the Bermuda Institute, and expanded recently to include all Government schools. This year, companies were formed in all these schools, with Berkeley Institute and Warwick Academy each forming two companies.
"In the spring, students can write the Young Enterprise exam at Oxford University and companies in the UK look favourably on this certificate, it demonstrates that much more self-drive and self-determination, several UK companies guarantee an interview for those with this certificate,'' added Mr.
Spurling, manager of corporate banking at the Bank of Bermuda.
Young Enterprise began 25 years ago in the UK where currently there are about 30,000 students who have formed about 2,000 companies.
