Laws combating money laundering and terrorism were passed through the Senate yesterday.

Attorney General Kim Wilson read the Proceeds of Crime Amendment Bill, which enables the courts to confiscate items used in money laundering offences.

Sen. Wilson also gave a reading to the Anti-Terrorism (Financial And Other Measures) Amendment Act, which makes it an offence to tip off those engaged in money laundering that an investigation is afoot. She said the legislation would enhance Bermuda's reputation and help bring it into line with international anti-terrorism guidelines.

Sen. Wilson, who is also Minister of Justice, pointed out that Bermuda is in the lowest risk category for money laundering terrorist financing. The laws were supported by fellow Senators, with Opposition Senate Leader Michael Dunkley saying: "The world has changed a lot and we need to keep up with the best practice."
