Banks busy on BSX

Banking was the busiest sector on The Bermuda Stock Exchange (BSX) last week, with millions of shares being traded in Butterfield Bank and Bermuda Commercial Bank Ltd. (BCB)

BCB saw 3,477,241 shares change hands, as it rose 19.75 percent ($1.63) to $9.88.

Butterfield Bank's right issues saw 1,878,192 shares transacted, as the share price dropped 99.99 percent ($59.96) to four cents.

The bank also traded 403,789 common shares, as their value fell 10.34 percent (15 cents) to $1.30.

And Butterfield saw 41 preference shares change hands, but their share price held firm at $200.

Elsewhere, MediaHouse Ltd. climbed 62.5 percent ($5) to $13, with 454 shares transacted, while BF&M Ltd. and the Ascendant Group Ltd. declined by 3.57 percent (50 cents) and 3.44 percent (50 cents) respectively.

BF&M closed at $13.50, with 8,684 shares traded, and the Ascendant Group saw 6,000 shares change hands to end the day on $14.

Overall, the Index slipped 58.83 points (4.4 percent) to 1,336.49, as 5,774,360 shares worth BD$35,346,256.38 and 7,711 shares worth US$133,101.50 were traded.

The BSX Insurance Index, however, was up 8.94 points (0.88 percent) at 1,003.06.
