Schools swat up for tech quiz
Students will be sharpening their pencils and their minds for the third annual Senior School Computer and Technology Quiz later this month.
The winning team members of the event, which is being held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium at CedarBridge Academy and hosted by Pembroke Rotary Club on Monday November 24, will each be presented with a laptop.
Each team will be asked questions on a cross section of computer terminology, with categories including the Internet, computer software, computer hardware, multimedia, communications and networking, everyday computer terms, computer maths terms and general computer glossary.
Schools represented at the event will include CedarBridge Academy, Berkeley Institute, Mount St. Agnes, Saltus Grammar, Bermuda High School for Girls, Warwick Academy, Bermuda Institute and The Learning Express.
Organiser and past president of the Pembroke Rotary Club, Alan Pailing, said the event was "a wonderful opportunity for Bermuda's technical students to share their knowledge in a competitive environment and have fun doing so".
"The event highlights some of Bermuda's future employees and their skills, particularly as most businesses look for computer knowledge in new recruits and with the sophistication of technology available these days, the knowledge these students possess is invaluable," he said. "Even chat room colloquialisms have a place in business these days."
Parents, teachers and the general public with their scarves and banners are all invited to attend and support the schools and there is a session that the audience will be invited to take part in and go head-to-head with the students.
In the past Pembroke Rotary Club has been involved in painting buildings at the Windreach facility and The Salvation Army shelter, clearing overgrown trees at the Hayden Chapel grounds and hosting a 'special person's' Xmas party, as well as staging its Annual Children's Fair, which donates more than $80,000 to participating primary schools on the Island.
Overseas projects include hosting Rotary exchange students, donating shelter boxes to the cyclone victims of Myanmar and the club is currently working on a water project to provide running water to thousands of people in Northern India.
Sponsors for this year's event include American International Group, Elan International, Xchanging, Bermuda Pest Control, Liberty Mutual, Ernst & Young, Bermuda Business Directory, Logic Communications, The Complete Office and RenaissanceRe. Admission to the event is free and doors open at 6.30 p.m.
