LONDON (Bloomberg) — Siemens AG won an order from Airtricity, the renewable energy division of Scottish and Southern Energy Plc, for 80 offshore wind turbines to be used in the North Sea, Siemens said.

The 3.6-megawatt turbines will give the Butendiek wind project a capacity of 288 megawatts, Siemens said yesterday in an e- mailed statement. The order is worth more than 400 million euros ($560 million), a person with knowledge of the order said. The person declined to be identified because financial details of the contract haven't been disclosed. Siemens says it aims to become by 2012 one of the top three global suppliers of wind power, a market it expects to grow by about 17 percent a year.

The Munich-based company ranks sixth in installed megawatts of wind-power equipment, behind Vestas Wind Systems A/S of Denmark, GE Wind Energy, Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica, SA of Spain, German rival Enercon GmbH and Suzlon Energy Ltd. of India.

It's No. 1 for offshore wind turbines.
