Stocks take tumble

Stocks tumbled across the board, not just globally and in the US, but on The Royal Gazette/Bermuda Stock Exchange Index (BSX) last week.

All sectors were hit, with banking taking a big loss, as Bermuda Commercial Bank Ltd. and Butterfield Bank fell by 75 cents (7.5 percent) and 20 cents (1.37 percent).

Insurance also suffered, with BF&M Ltd. and Argus Group Holdings Ltd. plummeting $1.45 (7.45 percent) and 50 cents (3.44 percent) respectively.

Elsewhere, in transportation, Bermuda Aviation Services Ltd. dropped 75 cents (12 percent) and Bermuda Container Line Ltd. was down 25 cents (2.22 percent), while Bermuda Press (Holdings) Ltd. (minus $1) and Devonshire Industries Ltd. ( minus 50 cents) both declined.

The most varied sector was utilities, with KeyTech Ltd. dropping 75 cents (5.76 percent), but Belco Holdings Ltd. up five cents (0.26 percent).

The Index as a whole ended down 112.2 points (2.58 percent) for the week, with 119,569 shares totalling $1,825,557.65 traded.
