THE JOB with PETER REUBINSON
Peter Reubinson
Age: 52
Role: Fairmont Gold Butler
What is your job? Here at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Fairmont Gold is a hotel within the hotel that takes our service and luxury to an even higher level. As head butler for Fairmont Gold, I am responsible for making sure our guests' needs are taken care of. This includes anything that can make their stay more pleasurable, be it unpacking or packing, running errands, making a dinner reservation or finding that special gift for their loved ones-whatever we can do.
What is your favourite part of the job? I like everything to do with my job. We have guests from around the world and I enjoy finding out what brings them here, helping them decide what to do during their stay and finding whatever way I can to make their stay in Bermuda memorable.
What is the least favourite part of the job? I'm not sure I have a least favourite part, I like it all.
What is your most interesting experience at work? We had a celebrity guest staying with us during the Bermuda International Love Fest weekend who wanted some cuff links for her husband on a Sunday. Most shops are closed, but I knew that the shops in Dockyard are open, so I jumped on my motorcycle and headed to Clocktower Mall. I returned with a nice set of cuff links and some charming Bermuda gift cards. She was very pleased.
One morning, a guest arrived in a panic. He was late to an interview and his shoelaces had broken. I handed over the laces from my own shoes and he was able to head on his way. Another guest was due to deliver a key address and was alarmed to find he had forgotten to pack his dress shoes. Luckily, we had similarly sized feet, so off he went in my shoes and delivered his speech as planned. I have lent my blazer to guests who have forgotten theirs and have even gone clothes shopping for guests when their luggage has gone astray.
At Fairmont, we go the extra mile for our guests. I like to say: "I will do anything for our guests, as long as it's legal."
What would you be doing otherwise? If I were not a butler, I would like to be a gardener. I was a chef for many years and find it fascinating that you can have fresh vegetables at the ready just weeks after planting a few seeds. I have a 3' x 2' plot right outside my door with a whole array of produce growing.
