130 attend compliance officers event

More that 130 of Bermuda’s compliance officers, money laundering reporting officers, and others tasked with making sure their companies follow policies, procedures and laws, turned up for a seminar yesterday presented by the Association of Bermuda Compliance Officers, whose president is Cheryl Mapp.Guest speaker and presenter was former money launderer turned compliance and financial crime consultant Ken Rijock. The theme of yesterday’s event was “Emerging Threats” and it examined the challenges compliance officers face in meeting the demands of increasing breadth and depth of regulation, which governments have imposed in response to the financial crisis and a string of major frauds.Clearly, one of the main concerns of the audience was the emerging threat to them from regulators.“There is no doubt in my mind this is becoming a more and more dangerous occupation,” Mr. Rijock said. “We are being held to a higher and higher standard.”He added: “Banks are now subjected to some of the worst fines and regulation you ever want to see.”
