Bermuda’s Kawaley to talk at offshore conference

Bermuda Supreme Court judge Ian Kawaley will be among a panel of leading offshore legal experts topping the bill at the 10th Annual OffshoreAlert Conference held in April.Mr Justice Kawaley will be discussing some of the key rulings and judicial issues impacting foreign individuals at the event.He will be joined by Edward Bannister, of the British Virgin Islands High Court, and Charles Quin, of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands, who all have extensive experience adjudicating complex disputes involving offshore finance.Mr Kawaley, who will become Bermuda’s next Chief Justice, effective from April 1, 2012, and Mr Bannister sit on the commercial division of their respective courts, while Mr Quin’s duties including hearing cases filed at Cayman’s financial services division.The high-powered panel will be chaired by internationally-renowned attorney Martin S Kenney, whose cross-border fraud and asset recovery practice is headquartered offshore.It is one of 25 sessions at the conference, which will take place at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach in Miami Beach, Florida from April 29 to May 1.Other featured speakers include Jeffrey Owens, head of tax at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in France, and Dan Reeves who, since 2003, has been the lead investigator for the US Internal Revenue Service’s Offshore Credit Card Project, Offshore Private Banking Initiative and other offshore compliance initiatives.Mr Owens and Mr Reeves will be part of a panel that will update attendees on the latest developments in the attempt by the world’s major countries to collect more taxes from taxpayers with assets held in offshore jurisdictions and the effectiveness of initiatives undertaken over the last few years.Other issues discussed will include Taxing Avoiders & Evaders: An Update, Offshore Courts: What Can Foreign Businesspeople Expect?, OECD Peer Reviews of Offshore Jurisdictions, Global Shell Game: Whose Worse Onshore or Offshore?, The Internationally-Agreed Tax Standard on the Exchange of Information: How is it implemented? and FATCA et al: US Tax & Securities Law Issues Associated With Serving US Clients.The ‘Global High Wealth Industry Group’ of the IRS: Implications for OFCs and Their High Net Worth Individual Clients, Offshore 101: An Overview of Offshore Products and Services, Offshore Special Purpose Vehicles Explained, The Meaning of the Term ‘Beneficial Ownership’ and OECD clarification Proposals, Start-to-Finish Explanation of Listing Offshore IBCs on the World’s Major Stock Exchanges and Russia Exposed: The Sergei Magnitsky Affair will also be debated.For more information visit http://www.offshorealert.com/conference/2012/register.aspx
