Sale agreed: Long-time Book Cellar owner Gill White (left), with new owner Kristin White

They love to read and they love St George’s.The proud new owners of the Book Cellar in the Old Town are husband and wife Dueane Dill and Kristin White. They bought the business from retiring owner Gill White and plan to reopen in early May after minor renovations this month. The couple moved to the East End nine years ago and Ms White says she fell in love with the Book Cellar on Water Street.“I casually remarked a few times to Dueane and others that I wanted to own that store,” Ms White said. “It’s so charming and lovely and there’s no other store like it.“Last week I saw a message on the St George’s Facebook page that the shop was closing and I posted a message saying ‘oh wow, I’d love to own a bookstore’. A St George’s business owner, Michelle Wales, who has also been instrumental in putting more attention on St George’s, told me to go for it.”So she did! And within eight days of posting the Facebook message, they owned the store.Ms White notes that interestingly, Gill White opened the store the same month 32 years ago, in 1980, the year she was born. She said the Book Cellar will be a labour of love more than anything. They hope to foster a love of reading and books and give back to their community.“We wanted to invest in St George’s a community that we love and that embraced us when we moved here,” Ms White said.“We have lots of ideas!” she said, adding they will be revealed when they reopen.“We are going to keep the rustic charm and add some lovely new touches. And we’re also going to host in-store and community activities, including our Grand Reopening in May!“The store has an incredibly extensive collection of Bermuda books, great novels, and interesting travel books. So I’m not going to mess with that too much ...”The travel books may get even more interesting as the couple both love adventure travel.Ms White is the executive director of youth charity Raleigh Bermuda and plans to continue that career, which has taken her on some exciting overseas expeditions.Husband Dueane is vice-president at Atlantic Security. As Ms White, notes, he is currently in Malaysia doing an Amazing Race-style challenge and raising money for Raleigh Bermuda.
