Even without a cruise ship, 2012 is proving to be a busy season in St George’s Harbour.Yesterday the Old Town hosted a record number of visiting luxury motoryachts, according to Mark Soares of Bermuda Yacht Services (BYS), demonstrating the potential value of a new marina in the East End.“It looks like Monaco down here”, Mr Soares said. “It’s a great injection of people, and it just looks great for the town. It’s a success story.”As many as four gleaming motoryachts were tied up at Ordnance Island yesterday: Amorazur II, Soulmate, Kisses and sailing superyacht Parsifal III. The Swedish sail training vessel Gunilla was also tied up in town. The sleek 177-foot Parsifal is said to be owned by Danish coffee machine millionaire Kim Vibe-Petersen and features such ultimate luxuries as TVs disguised in mirrors, mink bedspreads, a plunge pool on the deck, and an aft platform that allows guests in the owner’s suite to walk through ‘garage’ straight onto it.“We have two of the yachts leaving Wednesday, but we have two more scheduled to come in,” Mr Soares said. “It’s a great success for the town, and a great direction for the town.“There’s a lot of talk about building a marina down here, and this really shows that it is a feasible idea. It shows that we can support a marina.”He estimated that there were probably around 50 to 60 crew members on board the four motoryachts and the training vessel docked in St George’s.He added yacht travellers can be big spenders and have a notable impact on the town economy.Over the last three years, Mr Soares said that the number of yachts visiting the East End had increased by around 1,000 percent, thanks to efforts by BYS, Mayor Kenneth Bascome and the Government.“All of us have made an effort and realise the importance of yachting tourism and I think it’s really starting to have an effect,” Mr Soares said. “This is the most big boats at the dock at once that we have ever had.”Customs said the motoryachts were headed for the Azores after taking on fuel. With Parsifal alone having a fuel capacity of 10,162.58 US gallons, that’s a big injection into the local economy. The 175-foot Kisses is not owned by anyone from Hershey, but reportedly by billionaire car dealer Norman Braman. She is listed for sale in the $30 million range. The almost 150-foot totally-aluminium Amorazur II was formerly La Baronessa. It’s not clear who her current owner is.The US-flagged 106-foot Soulmate might be the smallest in the fleet, but she’s not short on luxury from her aft whirlpool to the mastersuite’s glass shower and walk-in-closets.
