Jones Dry Goods Store closes after 93 years
A Pembroke store is to wind its down its operation in the run-up to Cup Match — after nearly 100 years in business.
Jones Dry Goods Store, which has been in the same family for three generations, will close its premises on The Glebe Road in North Village after notching up 93 years of trading.
The store was founded in 1922 by tailor Walter Jones and his wife Adelina and originally sold bolts of cloth and school uniforms.
Jones’ was inherited by their daughter Vivienne Jones, who died last year aged 102, but who took an active role in the running of the store until she was 100.
A spokesman for the family said: “The store has been in business for many years — she has passed away now, but she lived her legacy and it’s just time for the business to close.
“We just want to enjoy the history as it was. Vivienne was very successful and was able to see the store through for her entire life. It’s now time for the store to close and remember her legacy in a positive fashion.”
The spokesman added: “She was a kind and generous person and so successful because of that kindness and generosity. It’s the end of an era.
“She came from a long line of successful merchants and we’re pleased she could see the store through to the end of her life — that’s what she wanted.”
The business has been run for the last year by Ms Jones’ great-niece and nephew, who honoured her wish to keep the store running while she was alive.
The store was renovated in 2010, but stuck to its traditional look.
Ms Jones, who aimed to stock a range of goods not available elsewhere, made regular trips to wholesalers in New York, where she became a familiar figure to Manhattan family-owned businesses over generations.
