Panel discussion on information security

Date privacy: there will be a Techtalk panel discussion on information security on February 25 at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club

A panel discussion will look at the seemingly competing demands of data security and the increasing expectations for public access to information.

The free event next Thursday will feature an expert panel that includes Gitanjali Gutierrez, Bermuda’s information commissioner.

The discussion will consider how increasing expectations for data transparency are being managed against data privacy requirements, and the potential repercussions in the event of a failure in those processes. Key areas include the personal information protection act, public access to information, and information security.

The event will look into concerns that personal data that is transmitted, stored and used across the internet and wireless devices can be captured and used for unintended purposes.

There are increasing demands for public access to information held by public authorities; how to address those requirements against the backdrop of privacy concerns will be considered by the panel, which includes Kerr Kennedy, senior manager, advisory and risk, EY, Nancy Volesky, director, privacy and data protection project, and William Francis, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development.

The discussion will be moderated by Sheridan Smith, director, management services and information technology, at the Bermuda Monetary Authority.

The event takes place at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, on Pomander Road, Paget, with a reception at 5.30pm and the discussion starting at 6pm.

It is part of the Techtalk initiative, which involves the Department of E-Commerce, Isaca Bermuda chapter, and the Chamber of Commerce.
