Certainty and confidence

Related: certainty in an organisation leads to confidence among team members

Uncertainty. When decisions have not been taken, for whatever reason, we are left wondering what will happen? This circumstance, often described as “being in limbo”, creates a whole series of issues as far as making progress is concerned.

The most significant loss is that of confidence. Confidence is based on certainty, on decisions, and knowing that a plan exists to reach towards a goal.

Another by-product is a loss of initiative on the part of the people and teams who have to work together to make things happen. In business this can lead to paralysis and eventually the loss of the business.

“The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty; not knowing what comes next.” — Ursula LeGuin
