Less sales in ICT and media sector
There were fewer sales of information and communication technology and telecommunication services in Bermuda during 2018.
The ICT, content and media sector had a total gross domestic product for the year of $209 million, a fall of $9 million from the previous year when measured in current prices.
Lower sales of telephone and IT equipment led to a 12.6 per cent decrease in capital investment in ICT when compared to 2017.
The value of imported ICT goods fell $9.9 million as a result of less imports of telecommunications, computers and related equipment.
In addition, ICT-related employment inched lower, with 891 jobs, which was four fewer than the previous year. However, the employment of IT professionals edged up to 466 jobs, an increase of two year-on-year.
The median annual income of computer professionals rose 4.4 per cent to $83,703, while software and application developers and analysts earned a median income of $119,000.
The statistics are revealed in the Bermuda Government’s Information and Communication Technology Profile report.
It also shows that sending and receiving e-mails is the top business use of the internet, at 92.8 per cent, followed by internet banking at 87.9 per cent.
Cloud services were used by 52.2 per cent of business, which was 3.6 percentage points higher than in 2017.
Smartphones were the most commonly used wi-fi enabled device for business, at 71.3 per cent in 2018. Some 92.8 per cent of businesses surveyed used computers for business operations, and 92.7 per cent used the internet.
