<Bz25>Bill Geist takes a look at Masterworks
When the Jack Russell terrier, Tillamook Cheddar, better known as ‘Tillie’ the canine “artist,” came to Bermuda recently under the auspices of the Masterworks Foundation, CBS roving reporter Bill Geist followed.
Known for his quirky and humorous segments on the popular ‘Sunday Morning’ television show, the concept of a dog “painting” for his supper caught Mr. Geist’s fancy.
Making the art connection between Tillie’s ‘masterpieces’ and ‘Masterworks’, Mr. Geist used a number of paintings from the ‘Masterworks Collection of Bermuda Art’ as backdrops during filming, which means that, editing decisions notwithstanding, countless viewers around the world will not only learn that such famous artists as Winslow Homer, Albert Gleizes, Ogden Pleissner and Georgia O’Keeffe all brought their easels to the Island, but also that some of their work now forms part of the Masterworks collection, when the segment airs during tomorrow’s screening of ‘Sunday Morning’.
The segment also includes interviews with Tom Butterfield and Elise Outerbridge of Masterworks. When asked by Mr. Geist what he thought of the idea of a dog as a painter, Mr. Butterfield waggishly said: “We wanted to put some fun into the environment of art — there is a touch of the creative in everyone.”
In addition to exhibiting her “paintings”, Tillie put on a number of demonstrations for human and canine guests.
