Theatre a place of wonder for savvy stage veteran
Producer/stage director Vivienne Elborne was born and raised in Britain. As a child, she did a great deal of acting and singing, and was a runner-up soprano at the famed Welsh Eisteddfod. Following her graduation from university, she became a professional singer and actress, singing with the British Broadcasting Corporation for many years. She appeared at many venues including the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and Westminster Abbey.
Mrs. Elborne also worked frequently on BBC radio, and performed with the BBC concert orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and others. She did session work with Marvin Hamlisch on the James Bond movie, 'The Spy Who Loved Me', and had numerous roles in operettas, musicals, and oratorios.
After marrying and having two children, a son and a daughter, the family left London and emigrated to the United States, where she continued her theatrical and musical career, playing title roles in many productions.
Among the many positions she has held throughout a busy and versatile career were those of artistic director of the San Pedro Playhouse in San Antonio, Texas, and resident stage director of the San Antonio Symphony's staged concert musicals. She has directed musicals, plays, concert musicals, revues, holiday shows, opera and choral spectaculars for the Alabama Symphony, among many others, and written director's guides for New York publishers, Music Theatre International, as well as scripts for educational symphony shows and much, much more.
In 1993 Mrs. Elborne was inducted into the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame, and is a winner of the JC Penney 'Spirit of the American Woman' award.
Her directing credits are extensive, and include the musicals 'Titanic', 'Evita', 'Phantom', 'A Chorus Line' and 'The King and I', while her play credits include 'The Lion in Winter', 'Merchant of Venice', and 'The Odd Couple'.
Mrs. Elborne prefers directing because she "gets to play all the roles and work with wonderful people", and particularly enjoys stage musicals backed by 70 to 80-piece orchestras because they provide an opportunity for her to hear the richness of the music. The first notes of an overture struck at the first rehearsal of any stage musical always thrills her. She gets "a lot of joy" from what she does, and feels very lucky to have the career she does. She also coaches and teaches young performers.
Through her daughter, she is a grandmother of three, and her married son is a US Marine serving his second tour of duty in Iraq.
In directing 'Drood' here, Mrs. Elborne makes her Bermuda debut.
