<Bz42>American Society to host 'world's largest outdoor barbecue'

July 4th: US Independence Day at Dockyard

Around 60 non-profit organisations will come together to throw one of the biggest parties in Bermuda — and to benefit local charities.

It will be hosted by the American Society, a Bermuda-registered charity founded in 1953, with the aim of fostering friendly relations between Bermuda and the US.

Held in conjunction with the US Consulate, the American Society’s annual Independence Day celebration has been described as a “freedom” celebration.

It will take place on June 30, from 5 to 10 p.m. at Moresby Plain, Ireland Island North.

In order to attend, you must be a member of the American Society or become one by May 15, or before tickets sell-out.

Organisers said the “huge barbecue” is expected to attract more than 5,000 people, with free food and drinks and 100 field events, plus live stage entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show.

This year’s honorary chairpersons are Premier Ewart Brown and Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley.

US Consul General Gregory Slayton, said: “This is the world’s largest outdoor barbecue celebration. Like so much that’s done in Bermuda, it’s really the generosity of the corporate community that makes this event possible.

“In particular, I would like to thank our four premium sponsors: The Ace Foundation, Bacardi, RenRe and the XL Foundation for their commitment to philanthropy in Bermuda.”

Along with regularly scheduled buses and ferries, the Ministry of Tourism and Transport has arranged for extra ferries and express bus service from St. George’s, Hamilton and Rockaway.

Dr. Brown said the event highlighted another example of a synergy between the private and corporate sector.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Bermuda, I’m so thrilled to highlight another wonderful example of public-private partnership,” he said.

Mr. Dunkley added that his efforts, along with the Premier’s, showed that unity and freedom could rise above politics. For further information, log onto www.americansociety.bm or call 291-3543.
