LaKisha Jones cut from 'American Idol'
FLINT, Michigan (AP) — Now that she's an ex-"American Idol" contestant, LaKisha Jones says she's focusing on two goals: a record contract and a new home. The 27-year-old single mother and Flint native was booted from Fox network's talent contest on Wednesday night.
Jones spoke yesterday morning with WJBK-TV in Detroit, telling an interviewer that she is looking forward to pursuing a recording career and eventually moving into a new home.
First up, though, Jones is scheduled to appear on the upcoming "American Idol" tour, and will be in the season finale episode of the top-rated show.
"I'm not going to get any rest," she said.
With Jones' departure, the number of "Idol" contestants is down to three: Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks and Melinda Doolittle.
Jones said she wasn't surprised, especially after judge Simon Cowell predicted moments earlier that she was going home.
"I thought, 'Yep he's right. This is it. This is where it's going to end'. I kind of figured that me and Blake would be in the bottom. I just thought, 'You know what? OK, my time is up'."
As tears streamed down her face, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest told Jones she should be proud.
"I am," she replied, before taking the stage to reprise her rendition of "Stayin' Alive" to a boisterous crowd.
Jones' grandmother, Ruth Morris of Flint, watched the show and said she was proud of her. She said Jones' mother and four-year-old daughter, Brionne, were with her in California on Wednesday.
"We've got a star here," Morris said.
