Group plans money-spinning event for the Island's cyclists

Ricky Sousa, Jr.: Representing Bermuda for the first time at the Island Games.

The Bermuda Bicycle Association is putting wheels in motion to send the country’s cyclists to the Island Games.

It has organised the ‘Ultimate Spin Class’ to help raise funds to send the Bermuda National Cycle Team to this year’s competition in Rhodes, Greece.

The event takes place at The Athletic Club tomorrow between 9a.m.-1p.m.

Bermuda Bicycle Association President, Peter Dunne, said: “The BBA is thrilled to have The Athletic Club as a partner in our fundraising efforts for the Island Games in Greece. The assistance that Kym Burns and the team at TAC are providing us with the ‘Ultimate Spin Class’ will hopefully make the participation of the Bermuda cycling squad financially viable, and expose the team to a high level of competition.” The Association was established in 1974 to develop talent in cycling on the Island and at an international level.

Dannielle Bezant, Bermuda Cycling Team Manager, said: “The 2007 Island Games is a great opportunity for the national squad to develop further as a team. Our team consists of both experienced riders and those new to this competition, making this a great combination.”

Representing Bermuda for the first time in this competition are Ricky Sousa, Jr. and Mark Hatherly.

Their teammates include Wayne Scott, Geri Mewett and Garth Thompson, all of whom have previously participated in the Island Games.

The women’s road bike events will be contested by Dee McMullen and Ashley Robinson, while Kim McMullen will be competing in the mountain bike events. Ms Robinson said: “This will be the second time I have been selected to participate in the Island Games for cycling, and I’m training very specifically to reach my best form for the competition.

“The level of competition is a real challenge, and I’ll give my full effort to represent Bermuda.”

During the ‘Ultimate Spin Class’, individuals can participate for the full four hours or share the allotted time as part of a team of four. The goal is to have companies sponsor one or more bikes at $1,000. Snacks and a light lunch will be served, compliments of the Barefoot Baker, with drinks supplied by Dunkley’s Dairy.
