The Ultimate Spin Class will take place at The Athletic Club tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is a fundraising event to help Bermudian cyclists participate in the Island Games in Rhodes, Greece. The Bermuda Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne said: “The BBA is thrilled to have The Athletic Club as a partner in our fundraising efforts for the Island Games in Greece. The assistance that Kym Burns and the team at TAC are providing us with the Ultimate Spin Class will hopefully make the participation of the Bermuda cycling squad financially viable, and expose the team to a high level of competition.”
The Bermuda Bicycle Association was established in 1974, with the aim of developing talent to represent Bermuda in cycling both locally and internationally.
Dannielle Bezant, Bermuda Cycling team manager, said: “The 2007 Island Games are a great opportunity for the national squad to develop further as a team. Our team consists of both experienced riders and those new to this competition, making this a great combination.”
Ricky Sousa, Jr. and Mark Hatherly will be representing Bermuda for the first time in this competition and their performances will benefit greatly from the presence of Wayne Scott, Geri Mewett and Garth Thompson, all of whom have participated in prior Island Games.
The women’s road bike events will be contested by Dee McMullen and Ashley Robinson while Kim McMullen will be competing in the mountain bike events.
The Ultimate Spin Class is not an actual race, individuals can participate in the event for the full four hours, or teams of up to four can do the allotted time. The goal is to have companies sponsor one or more bikes at $1,000. Snacks and a light lunch will be served compliments of the Barefoot Baker, with drinks supplied by Dunkley’s Dairy.
National team member Ashley Robinson said: “This will be the second time I have been selected to participate in the Island Games for cycling, and I’m training very specifically to reach my best form for the competition. The level of competition is a real challenge, and I’ll give my full effort to represent Bermuda.” For additional information please contact Kym Burns on 295-6140.
