Step back in time ...

Come one, come all! That is the invitation the St. George’s is extending to its second annual living history lesson about Bermuda.

‘A Somers Evening’ will be a virtual step back in time and feature skits, historic re-enactments and musical entertainment at various locations around the streets.

Citizens in period costume will also be found strolling the streets in the personae of various historical figures, all recounting their life stories.

These include Sir George Somers, Mary Prince, Pilot James Darrell, Anne Bingham, Midshipman Dale and President Henry Tucker.

Two new, short plays written especially for ‘A Somers Evening’ , one by William Zuill, Sr., and the other by Barbara Jones, will be performed.

Mr. Zuill’s play has three characters, including Sir George Somers and Christopher Carter, a sailor from the Sea Venture, and is set at the time when Sir George returned to the Island from Jamestown on the Patience, one of two vessels built here for the interrupted journey to the Jamestown settlers following the wreck of the Sea Venture.

Re-enactments will take place at The State House, the Bermudian Heritage Museum, the Town Hall, Mitchell House, the replica of the>Deliverance, Tucker House and the Globe Hotel.

For only the second time ever, a part of the first degree freemasonry ritual of the Lodge of St. George’s No. 200 on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland will be performed at the State House, which has been the Lodge’s home for over 200 years.

The evening will end with a grand finale on the town square at 9.15 p.m. when a public punishment will be carried out at the stocks and pillory, followed by a draw for raffle prizes.

“We are really excited about this year’s event, which promises to be an evening of family fun and entertainment,” event co-ordinator Barbara Holmes Simons said. “Our volunteers have put together quite a show for attendees. This year we have partnered with JARGAN Theatre Enterprises whose actors will present several lively re-enactments during the course of the evening, including the grand finale.”

The event will begin at 7 p.m., with plenty of parking available at Tiger Bay.

Partnering with the St. George’s Foundation are the Bermuda National Trust, the Bermudian Heritage Association, the St. George’s Historical Society, Lodge St. George, the Corporation of St. George, St. Peter’s Church, JARGAN Theatre Enterprises, the Olde Towne Railway, residents of historical homes and volunteer actors and helpers.

The St. George’s Foundation is a registered charity founded in 1977 which is dedicated to raising funds for the Town of St. George’s and its related fortifications, now a World Heritage site.
