Writer uses technology to advertise her travel book

New book: Rosemary Jones, who has completed her first travel book' Moon Bermuda'. Her publishers suggested using a podcast to reach more readers.

From one small publishing company to broadcasting around the world — one Bermudian woman discovered how technology could advertise her book.

A year ago, Rosemary Jones was completing her travel book on Bermuda, called 'Moon Bermuda', when her publishing company, convinced her to do an interview with Rick Steves, a prolific travel writer and host of his own radio show.

The difference between this interview and others, was after completion the interview was converted into a podcast that can be downloaded onto any MP3 player and makes it accessible to anyone with the internet.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette before boarding a plane, Ms Jones, said it was the first travel book she has published and the podcast was her publishers idea.

"It was arranged by Avalon Travels Publishing as this is one of their fall 2006 releases. Rick Steves often features what is coming up and so the publisher put it together.

"It is a great way to reach so many people."

Because Avalon Travels has a very small, but dedicated readership, the podcasts are an easy and affordable way to get there authors out to a broader audience.

The eight-minute segment on Moon Bermuda begins with Mr. Steves posing questions to Ms Jones about the surf in Bermuda, the accessibility as well as questions from others who have submitted questions via email.

Listeners questions ranged from how they can find affordable accommodations to how easy is it to bring children to visit the Island.

While callers were from all over the United States, Ms Jones was comfortably sitting in Bermuda and Mr. Steves was in his office in Edmonds, Washington.

However, uniting the two and creating access to the rest of the world is the taped interview available via podcast.

It is available on Rick Steves website at http://www.ricksteves.com/radio/archive.htm#22 and Ms Jones' eight-minute segment on Bermuda is part of Mr. Steves travels to London.

He explains that after visiting London in an interview with a travel agent there, his listeners will be able to take a trip to somewhere else in the British Empire, though with better weather.

Explaining what a trip to Bermuda would be like Ms Jones' helps her book as much as she does Bermuda.

"It was a great way to reach travel writers and with the tourist season approaching, I hope it reaches people going to the Island," she added.
