On the Arts Scene
Multi-media exhibition opening at Elliot Gallery tonight
‘Visual Poetry: Sea Inside’ is the title of the new multi-media exhibition opening at the Elliot Gallery on Jubilee Road in Devonshire this evening.
The show is driven by the writing of published poets Chris Astwood, Dr. Kim Dismont Robinson, Lisa Howie, and Alan C. Smith, whose works have been published in The Caribbean Writer (vol.19) and the Bermuda Anthology of Poetry (2006), as well as photographer Scott Hill, whose work will accompany wife, Lisa’s.
For poets Astwood, Robinson, and Smith the exhibition is part of a developing performance group called ‘3 Crabs in a Bucket’. For Lisa Howie and Scott Hill, it represents a second chapter in the series, ‘Pixels & Poems’, first displayed at the Bermuda Society of Arts Edinburgh Gallery last December.
The title of the exhibition, ‘Visual Poetry: Sea Inside’, captures the dominant motif of the ocean, and the notion of reflection, both common threads in the writing. Themes of time, relationships, and the “continuity and discontinuity between generations” are also included.
The opening reception is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and all are welcome.
On July 18 and 21 the poets will present a live performance of their poetry at the gallery, beginning at 7 p.m. Their writing will be embellished visually with 3-D shapes, collage, digital design, and photography. The events are being supported by the Bermuda Arts Council. Tickets ($15) can be purchased from Bermuda Book Store, Rock Island, and the Elliot Gallery.
