Barmuvinjam 'clash' promises to please fans of all Caribbean music

The night after Cup Match, the party will stay in St. George's for the first ever on Island clash between reggae and soca music.

Barmuvinjam presents the 2nd annual Cup Match after party Reggae vs. Soca, to take place Saturday night at Beach It, Fort St. Catherine, for a clash that features three sets of DJ's, cash prizes for best dancers and various give-away.

Barmuvinjam president, Renalda Bean said people seem excited about the concept and are already debating which side will win.

"With each Barmuvinjam event, we endeavour to bring to our patrons a new experience. The idea for a Dancehall vs. Soca "clash" actually came from when we were in Barbados doing the MVP party.

There was a similar party going on at a club in Barbados and we thought the concept would do well here."

He said the name was simple, Reggae/Dancehall vs. Soca with the undisputed champion, Dancehall having to defend its crown against the up and coming challenger, Soca.

Mr. Bean explained the night will be about clean fun with a mature crowd and lots of surprises for all reggae and soca lovers.

"This night will be fun fun fun. We have some heavyweight DJ's lined up on both sides and they will be doing their best to win the crown. We want full crowd participation, that means wear black and bring your lighters and horns if you are supporting Dancehall, and wear white and bring your flags and whistles if you are supporting Soca."

The DJ's for the reggae side are Magnum Force, Shock N Lust and Immortal Vybez. Barmuvinjam resident DJ, D'General will represent the soca side along with Trini Boy and Penthouse. When asked how he thinks he competition will fare, Mr. Bean said: "Honestly most people would say that there will be a bigger reggae crowd than soca, but we have a lot of die hard soca fans out there too!", with the winner being determined by the crowd.

Mr. Bean wouldn't say if there would be any live performances or what the set up would be like. He did say partygoers would "definitely feel the vibe when you enter the place".

The party will take place on Saturday night. Tickets are $15 in advance, $25 at the door and $10 in advance for members and can be purchased through Barmuvinjam members or by calling 505 9601.

Remember, reggae/dancehall supporters wear black and come armed with lighters and horns. Soca lovers wear white and come with flags and whistles.
