About Outward Bound
Outward Bound is an international organisation which offers youngsters many different experiences which provide new skills and knowledge on a wide variety of subjects, including sports, during which they are challenged and learn a lot about themselves, writes Nancy Acton.
"Part of the Outward Bound philosophy is to learn about yourself from a position that is completely different. To be isolated from the land without all the comforts of home, and to try new things with new people," says coordinator Mark Norman, who is also on the international board of Outward Bound.
Current summer courses are held on Paget Island and last five days. They cater to boys and girls (in separate camps) aged 12 to 15. From September to May there are courses for Middle School students on a one-day basis, and courses can also be tailored for corporate and adult groups.
Activities include high and low rope climbing, water sports and community service. Some activities emphasise teamwork, while others test the individual with team support.
"Everyone's comfort level is different, so sometimes participants have to push themselves to move to the next level," Mr. Norman says. "We also have problem-solving camps. In fact, we have so many activities now that we can't do everything in five days. Each week's course is different. The camps are a lot of fun and the kids get a lot out of them."
A group of 16 16-year-olds are currently on a tougher, three-week Outward Bound course in Wales, some of whom are also working on their Duke of Edinburgh gold awards.
There are vacancies for girls aged 12-13 on the August 11-15 course, and anyone wishing to apply should contact Mark Norman at (cell) 515-5736. The cost is $150.
