Artistic duo join forces once again
They met as fellow golfers 20 years ago, but it is the artistic link which continues to enrich their friendship and leads to occasional joint 'Contrasts' exhibitions, the newest of which opens tonight at the Masterworks Gallery on Bermuda House Lane.
Neither master sculptor Chesley Trott nor artist Shirley James need any introduction to art lovers, which is always exciting.
Mrs. James will show approximately 20 works in oils, pastel or pencil featuring a wide variety of Bermuda subjects, while Mr. Trott has created approximately 11 wood and bronze sculptures largely focusing on realistic and abstract interpretations of the human figure.
Mr. Trott gained his teaching certificate at the Ontario College of Art in Canada, and later studied at the Ealing College of Art. The former art teacher is known today primarily for his cedar sculptures, but also enjoys working in a variety of other woods, as well as working in bronze.
Canadian-born Mrs. James began studying art as a child, but went on to gain a Bachelor of Science degree
before working as a dietician and nutritionist in Montreal, where she met Dr. Clarence James. It was after the family returned to Bermuda that her interest in art was rekindled, and for some years she studied and painted with well known Bermudian artist John Kaufmann. Over the years she has participated in various exhibitions, and she is also a member and former board member of the Bermuda Society of Arts, Masterworks and the Bermuda National Gallery.
As always, this duo have enjoyed collaborating on their fourth 'Contrasts' exhibition.
"We found that we were very compatible when arranging shows, even though we don't see each other all the time," Mrs. James says.
"The good thing about it is that Shirley has a sense of organisation, at which I am hopeless, so I need her help," Mr. Trott. "I made her a promise that whatever she decides I am happy with. I don't argue with her decisions."
The public is welcome to attend tonight's opening of 'Contrasts', which is from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m., following which the exhibition will continue through October 9. For further information ( 295-5580.
