Bermuda in magazine spotlight
ward-winning US magazine, ?La Vie Claire? has devoted 15 full colour pages of its Style section in the Summer 2006 edition to what it terms ?Bermuda Style?, and a further six pages, also in full colour, to the Newport-Bermuda race in its ?Inspiration? By the Sea section.
The editorial content in ?Style? (written by Lauren Kornhiser) provides an overview of the design, colours and architectural features and traits of traditional Bermuda homes before focusing on three in particular: ?Somerwood?, the home of Linda Jo and Alan Burland; ?Ivy Cottage?, the home of Beryl Brown and husband Scott King; and ?Cave House?, the home of Patti Crouch and husband Thad.
The owners of each residence are interviewed about the design, history, special features and furnishings of their homes, supported by Terry Pommett?s lush colour photography of interiors, exteriors, gardens and in some cases nearby water views.
Mr. Burland is a civil engineer and president of BCM McAlpine, while his wife Linda Jo is a special needs teacher. Yale-trained architect Mrs. Brown and her husband Scott, a former ship?s captain, own the architectural, interior design and project management firm, The Studio Ltd., of which Mr. King is managing director. Mrs. Crouch is a professional interior designer.
Scott King is the author of ?Sailing into History? in which he gives a first-person perspective on the biennial Newport-Bermuda ?thrash to the Onion Patch,? in which he has participated six times, as well as the post-race social life. The well-written text is supported by photographer Barry Pickthall?s superb race action photography. La Vie Claire is a relatively new US magazine which was launched last year. Already in its short life it has won a ?Best Magazine, New Design? Ozzie award, and is an up-market publication whose hallmarks include sophisticated layouts and superlative photography.
Published quarterly, the magazine?s self-described mission is ?celebrating lives lived with passion, places that inspire, experiences that expand, homes and settings that fulfil a vision?.
With international subscribers, the 15-page Bermuda spread in La Vie Claire (The Clear Life) will provide invaluable free publicity for the Island, which hopefully will augur well for local tourism.
