BIFF to serve up some treats for children
The Academy Award nominated film, ?The Triplets of Belleville?, is one of two feature length films to be screened in the ?BIFF Kids? section of next month?s Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) which runs from March 19-25.
The French film is nominated for an Oscar in the ?Best Animated Feature? category, and will screen here with English sub-titles. The Academy Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday.
?The Time of the Wolf?, a coming-of-age film from the production company that made last year?s BIFF Kids offering, ?Touching Wild Horses?, will also screen at BIFF.
The BIFF Kids films are presented in partnership with festival sponsors, The Bank of Butterfield, who view the children?s section of the festival as having the potential to help enrich and enhance the cultural education of young people. In turn, BIFF will be looking at ways to expand the children?s offerings in future.
?Time of the Wolf? will screen on Sunday, March 21 at 4 p.m. at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute Theatre. The film tells the story of Aaron, who loses his parents at a very young age and goes to live with his aunt and uncle whom he has never met before. His loneliness in his new home is underscored by the melancholy howling of wolves on the hill near their home. Farmers hunting for the wolves manage to kill every wolf except one, which is very badly injured. Aaron secretly befriends and cares for the wolf, giving him a name, Roland. At school, Aaron has a tough time making friends. A bully in his class, Big Josh Grossler, resents Aaron?s intelligence and teases him. At home, Aaron finds it hard to live with his uncle and cold aunt. When he is offered a home with his cousin and wife he is torn between wanting to go and not wanting to leave Roland. In the end, the courage that Aaron learns from his wolf friend enables him to embrace the future, which is waiting for him.
?The Triplets of Belleville? will screen on Tuesday, March 23 at 6.30 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre. The film tells the story of Champion. Adopted by his grandmother, Madame Souza, Champion grows from a lonely little boy into a champion cyclist. While competing in the Tour de France, Champion is kidnapped. Madame Souza and her faithful dog Bruno set out to rescue Champion. Along the way, they meet the renowned Triplets of Belleville ? three eccentric music hall stars from the ?30s who take Madame Souza and Bruno under their wing.
?Raptiles on de Rock II: The Wenetian Incident?,a short film by Bermudian filmmaker Al Seymour Jr., will screen prior ?The Triplets of Belleville?.
?A Wrinkle in Time?, a third children?s feature film, will also screen. However, the festival?s screening agreement with rights holder ABC stipulates that the festival cannot charge an admission fee for the film. The festival, in conjunction with Bank of Butterfield, will be distributing the tickets to children?s charities.
