There was a tie for first place when a local bank regocognised five Bermuda College students for their outstanding mathematics acumen and awarded them cash grants.

The Bank of Butterfield gave awards totaling $1,700.00 to the students in recognition of their performance in the Student Mathematics League of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

For the past seven years, Bermuda College students have participated in this League, along with over 100 institutions in North America. The competition consists of two one-hour tests, one each term, over the course of the academic year.

The examinations are demanding and test the students to the height of their mathematics abilities.

This year's group had the distinction of posting the highest ever average team score, per round, in the history of Bermuda College's participation in the event. The top performances by the Bermuda College students, and the level of their Bank of Butterfield cash awards, were:

1st place: Angela Brangman $500

2nd place: Elizabeth Nelson $500

3rd place: Chinue Pitcher $300

4th place: Shae James $200

5th place: Latanya Dickinson $200

On hand to present the awards to the students was Bank of Butterfield representative Charles Smith, he also presented a plaque which will display the names of the students.
