Celebrate the day of the child

While she sent out a challenge for the community to see the good in Bermuda's youth, executive director of The Family Learning Centre Martha Dismount encouraged residents to celebrate the Universal Day of the Child on November 20.

In addition to having its annual walk-a-thon, the organisation will also be hosting an array of events.

"This year we wanted to take it a step further and really bring into consciousness that children by nature are more receptive to right and good than we would believe," Mrs. Dismount said.

Tomorrow, motivational speaker Stedman Graham, fianc? of talk show host Oprah Winfrey, will talk to parents on how children can make life happen for themselves. The venue for the talk will be St. Paul's Centennial Hall in Hamilton. Tickets are $15. With the theme, "Kid Power", the annual walk-a-thon will take place on Sunday, November 17, starting at 1 p.m.

Families are asked to meet at Victoria Park for the walk to the Botanical Gardens.

"Kid Power reinforces the message that children have within themselves incredible power to overcome enormous obstacles, and do good for themselves and others."

With the Universal Day of the Child on Wednesday, November 20, Mrs. Dismount urged people to support "Kid Power" by dressing in purple and making a $3 donation.

She also challenged the community to report any good they see youth doing to the Family Learning Centre by calling 295-1116.
