Classical concert to feature local musicians

When the curtain goes up on 'An Evening of Orchestral Music' at City Hall theatre tomorrow night it promises to be a memorable event.

The 29-strong orchestra has been put together especially for two Bermuda Festival performances, and includes some of the finest classical musicians on the Island. Among them are faculty members of the Menuhin Foundation and the Bermuda School of Music, as well as guest musicians from Bermuda and the United States.

Miss Tatiana Dran, who teaches at the Bermuda School of Music, will have the honour of hearing the world premi?re of a work she wrote for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble. Entitled 'Swan,' it was specifically commissioned by the Bermuda School of Music for this Festival, and will be sung by fellow teacher Janet Budden.

The programme will open with Vivaldi's 'Concerto for Two Trumpets and String Orchestra,' featuring soloists Tim Rhodes and Conrad Roach on piccolo trumpet.

This will be followed by Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez (1939)' with guitarist Stephen Crawford as the soloist. Bernstein's 'Candide Overture,' Dran's 'Swan,' and Prokofiev's 'Classical Symphony' will round out the programme.

Bermuda School of Music principal John York Skinner will conduct the Vivaldi, Rodrigo and Dran works, while colleague Mark Dorrell will conduct the Bernstein and Prokofiev works.

"The programme is all classical, and its content has been deliberately chosen to accommodate a relatively small orchestra," Mr. York says. "The Rodrigo guitar concerto is quite classical in its shape, architecture and the way it is scored, and the Prokofiev was modelled on a symphony of Haydn. The 20th century pieces have also been designed to be played by a small, classical orchestra."

'An Evening of Orchestral Music' takes place at City Hall Theatre tomorrow and Thursday nights, beginning at 8 p.m. For ticket/further information call 292-8572.
