Couple follow Lance?s trail to benefit SPCA

Jayne Jones, director of The Tone Zone corporate gym in the Wellesley building on The Waterfront, Pitts Bay, is one sporty woman.

She and her husband Nick Jones are about to take part in an adventure that will leave mouths gaping to the sound of it.

They will pedal along the paths of mega stars like seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in the Alps this month.

?We will be doing a part of the Tour de Franceroute with a tour group of 40 cyclists,? said Jayne.

The couple will be the only Bermudians in the tour group.

Jayne, who has always had a love for animals, decided to use this as an opportunity to raise funds for the Bermuda SPCA.

?I don?t know what people will give but I hope they are going to be very generous for such a worthy cause,? she said.

The couple will be travelling from July 15-22 on the Alps and Paris route, covering a distance of 50 to 70 miles and reaching a height of almost 7,000 feet above sea level.

?It?s going to be cold up in the mountains,? said Jayne who explained that although they are both very excited, it was not her plan initially.

?It was my husband?s idea,? she said. ?I?m terrified.?

However, she is certainly in shape and ready to shine. ?I?ve been riding between 100 and 150 miles a week.

I?ve been trying to ride as many hills in Bermuda as possible, which is very difficult because Bermuda is very flat compared to the Alps,? she said.

?I also row 3-4 times a week, teach four spinning classes a week and weight train twice a week.?

She added: ?And now I need to go to sleep. I?ll be so glad when this is over.?

Though neither Jayne nor her husband have been cycling on outdoor bikes for more than four years, both have been spinning for ten so have had plenty of experience working the right muscles.

Theresa Ince, manager of the Bermuda SPCA is very thankful for Mrs. Jones decision to donate the money to her charity.

?She is a very brave woman and obviously very athletic and in very good shape,? she said. ?What a great way to do something you enjoy and benefit a charity.?

Mrs. Ince explained that all the money raised would go towards the care of animals in the shelter.

?I would say we rely totally on the financial support of the local community so we are really run by donations. So whenever someone comes up with a creative way to make a donation we are appreciative.?

?We wish her the best of luck and look forward to her return!? exclaimed Mrs. Ince.

One particular day they will climb for over five hours ? conquering the Alp d?Huez which is famous for its trail that consists of 21 sharp bends that zigzag on a steep incline ? known as switchbacks.

With so much in store, what?s she looking forward to the most?

?Watching the finale in Paris on the Champs-?lys?es where I?ll see the peloton ? the final 10 laps of the race,? Jayne said.
