Couple's show reflects South American trip

The artistic duo of poet Lisa Howie and photographer Scott Hill will be offering up creations inspired by South America at their opening 'Pixels and Poems' at Bermuda Society of Arts tonight.

The works they will highlight were either written or photographed during their vacation last summer.

"The show itself captures some of the landscape, culture and people that we experienced while on a ski trip to Chile and Argentina," said Ms Howie.

"Inspiration came from various sources: a day on the slopes in knee-deep powder; discussions with people; shopping at an art fair, et cetera."

The married couple each drew on their unique talents over the course of the trip.

"We travelled together with camera and pen in hand and noted some similar experiences, but we have different eyes and lenses," said Ms Howie. "Putting the show together was rather organic ? my poems seem to fit the photographs more symbolically than literally, which I think audiences will appreciate."

The couple first visited a ski resort north of Santiago called Valle de Nevado before crossing the Andes to the Argentine ski gem of Las Lenas.

"Then we visited Buenos Aires for a couple of days," Ms Howie noted. "It was our honeymoon, actually. We got married in June."

Ms Howie said her photographer spouse is attracted to interesting shapes and reflections as well as juxtaposing images. Before they left Bermuda they had arranged with the Bermuda Society of Arts to have the exhibition, she added.

"And we have stayed committed to art solely generated from this trip," she added.

"It was a playful adventure and this theme is apparent in much of the writing. Sure there are a couple of philosophical moments, which can be expected when residing amongst the awesomeness of the Andes."

The magnitude of the South American mountain chain is impressive, she added.

"The Andes are a sight to behold. We have spent time amidst the Rockies and the Alps, but there is something expansive and innocent about these mountains.

"The ski resorts that we visited are cottage colonies compared the resorts of North America and Europe. It was a very personal experience with the people and the mountain."

In the end, the couple left with a taste for the unique flavour of their Southern Cone hosts.

"The snow in Chile tasted like ice cream, and I'm not kidding," Ms Howie said. "Apparently the salt from the Santiago's shoreline makes its way up to the peak."
