Dancehall legend Levy promises all his hits and more

Barrington Levy

The popular Reggae performer behind songs like ?Shine Eye Girl? and ?Living Dangerously? will be on Island this weekend for the Culture Shock?s Mystic in the Air concert at Snorkel Park.

Dancehall legend Barrington Levy spoke to from his farm in Jamaica where his Nubian goats bleated and his chickens clucked in the not-too-distant vicinity as he contemplated his over 35 years in the music industry.

Dubbed by many the ?Mellow Canary? for his pure musical style, Mr. Levy?s music production continues to be prolific.

He is a man of few words and was more interested in discussing this weekend?s weather in Bermuda than the concert scheduled for tomorrow night.

After being told he could expect a semi-Bermudaful weekend, with sunny breaks, some showers and a high of 83F, he said concert goers can expect a live session full of classics when they pass through the gates.

?I?ll be singing my songs and the Bermuda crowd can expect all my hits and more,? he said.

?All they have to do is come with their vibes and everything will be okay. I am looking forward to coming to Bermuda, as I haven?t been for a long, long time.?

Other performers set for this weekend?s event include Bascom X, Turbulance and MC Rickie B. Corvin Melody, Ari-Genae and Kilango will all be backed by the Detour Posse Band.

The early warm up will be provided Three The Hard Way, DJ Donnie, DJ Gibbo and Blacka from 7 to 10 p.m.

A true industry veteran, Mr. Levy has been working in the Jamaican music scene since the age of 14.

Although numerous DJs and vocalists would rise and fall over the course of those years, Levy has proven to be one of the few with staying power and has continued to release massive hits as the decades rolled on.

He has no plans of stopping soon. ?I?m working on a new album,? he said, ?It will be out next year.?

And he remains committed to the conscious and dancehall styles of reggae which have earned him loyal followings around the world.

?There is no other way,? he said. ?There is definitely no other way.

?On the album everyone can get a taste of everything, we have dancehall, we have conscious. I never really narrowed down my albums ? my music has always only been one way.?

Levy fans can expect to see some major industry players pop up in support of Mr. Levy on the album, however.

?There are a lot of combinations on my album, you are going to have Snoop Dog, Damian Marley and Shine,? he said.

With 30 years of work behind him and hopefully 30 more to come, Mr. Levy said people will always provide his artistic inspiration.

?Everyday people,? he said. ?It?s real life.

?I guess I?m blessed, that is the only thing I can say and thank God for that.?
