Feast of art and entertainment

The Butterfield Bank Art Festival saw about 3,000 visit the Botanical Gardens and almost $6,000 raised for the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

Sunday?s event featured a wide range of attractions and activities for the entire family.

Among the performers were Eddie Ming?s Drum School, salsa dancers, Pride Bermuda and the Dragon Girls.

Also showing off their talents were the United Dance Productions, Dellwood Dancers, Bermuda Fencing Federation, Bermuda School of Music, Jackson School, Dragon Girls, Pride Bermuda, CedarBridge Academy Cheerleaders and Jargan Theatre.

The barbecue was put on by Flying Chef and between that and the registration fees, $5,750 was raised towards Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art building fund. There were also more than 140 works by local artists on the theme ?Many Cultures, One Future?.

?The winners of the seven and under category were Naveed Mustafa, in first place, Jolie Walker, in second, and Athena Ranasingne came in third,? said Butterfield Bank event organiser Victoria Evans.

?The 12 and under category saw Lulu Hedstrom, in the top spot, Michelle Pedro, in second, and Rhiannon Fletcher, in third.

?Micrae Smith was first place winner, Melinda Saraiva, came in second and Melissa Spurling, placed third in the 16 and under category.

?In the 21 and under competition Rian Lindo placed third, Vi?Delle Pitt was second and the first place winner was April Branco, who sold her piece to a tourist who loved it so much.

?The adult competition yielded Janet Carew in first, Shelly Hamill in second and D.S. Caines in the third place spot.

?Of the seniors Nathalie Davis? work won first prize, Anna Cann?s piece was chosen for the second place spot and Joyce Joell-Hayden?s work was third.

?Of the professional artists portrait painter Vernon Clarke placed first, oil/pastel artist Frank Dublin?s work came in second and landscape artist Frank Chiappa?s work was selected for third place.?

The Quick Art art competition involved artists painting on-site. Alice Coutet won first prize, while professional artist Rhona Emmerson placed second.

This year the People?s Choice Awards went to Alice Coutet in the adult category. Lulu Hedstrom won the children?s category.
