Five receive scholarships in memory of top student who died tragically

Five local students will be helped in the pursuit of their post-secondary studies by the Trey D. Swan Memorial scholarship this year.

The scholarship was founded in memory of Trey by his parents, Brian and Sherry Swan. Trey died tragically in a drowning accident on June 10, 2002.

He had graduated from Berkeley Institute in June 2000 and in September of that year left Bermuda for France to complete an exchange year with Youth for Understanding ? a US Exchange Programme.

He was a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver medallist and an avid tennis player.

At the time of his death, he was enrolled in the Associate Degree Transfer programme at Bermuda College.

Funds in support of the annual Trey D. Swan scholarships are raised by generous Bermudians, mostly family and friends of the Swans, along with corporate sponsorship. The scholarships are available for undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

Scholarships were awarded this year to: Kim Johnston and Lorenzo Whitehurse, both pursuing Associate degrees at Bermuda College; Marica Burgess, who has just started at the College; Erek Fox who has started Acadia University; and Tyeisha Fubler, who is attending Dalhousie University.
