French Canadian flavour comes to the festival

French Canadian comedienne Natalie Choquette presents the first of her two Bermuda Festival performances tonight when she will put her own distinctive and unforgettable flavour upon the world of opera, singing some of its most famous arias.

Born in Japan the daughter of a Canadian diplomat, Miss Choquette's interest in opera was piqued at age 11 when she saw a performance of 'Aida' at the open air Baths of Carcalla in Rome, Italy. When her family moved to Russia, she studied under Vivieia Gromova of the Stanislavsky Theatre, whose training regime moulded and disciplined the young voice. From then on, she has "lived and breathed" opera, and embarked on her professional career with the Choeurs de l'Opra and Socit de Musique Contemporain du Qubec.

Her first album was launched in 1991, but it was in 1993 that the singer decided to match her extraordinary sense of humour with her sparkling, agile voice, and voil! 'La Diva...Natalie Choquette' was born. Her highly successful formula was acclaimed by audiences and critics and she has never looked back.

As satirical as her approach to opera is, however, she does not compromise the music, and while some purists may sniff at her onstage antics (popping out of a giant hatbox or turning into a hamburger, to name but two), Ms Choquette has earned the support of many distinguished musicians.

The singer has performed in many countries, and with such renowed orchestras as the Vienna Symphony. She is the recipient of many international awards.

Her performances, reflecting a happy blend of the passion of Italy, the discipline of Moscow, and the humour of her French Canadian roots, has won new audiences to opera and others, not only because she brings a new source of humour to opera lovers, but also performs well-known pieces, such as 'Chariots of Fire' from other musical genres.

Fellow Canadian, Scott Bradford is Ms Choquette's accompanist. Mr. Bradford, who holds a Master's degree from McGill University, is well known in the Montreal region for his colourful and dramatic orchestral transcriptions on the organ accompanying various choirs and singers, and he is also in great demand as an organ soloist. Mr. Bradford also directs a creative professional choral programme at a Montreal church, in addition to his work as actor and pianist with Ms Choquette.

'La Diva...Natalie Choquette' is at City Hall tonight and tomorrow night, beginning at 8 p.m. For further/ticket information see today's Bermuda Calendar.
